Manervia was born in 1839 in Floyd County, Kentucky, in the eastern corner of the state. She was the ninth of the 13 children of Morgan R. Puckett (1801-1890) and Susan Whitaker (1800-1877). When she was a young girl, she moved with her parents and siblings to Breathitt County. In 1866 she married James Kash Cockerham (1846-1916) at a place called Puckett’s Bend. At the time, she was 27 and James was 20. They were the parents of four children, one daughter and three sons, born between 1868 and 1881. For awhile they ran a boarding house near the timber felling industry, then they moved into Campton where they ran a hotel and livery stable. After James died in 1916, Manervia bought a small house in Campton, where she lived until her death in 1921.
