James Kash Cockerham was born on 25 June 1846 in Owsley County, Kentucky, the son of James Henry Cockerham (1822-1904) and Emily Stamper (1826-1900). In 1866, James married Zerilda Manervia Puckett (1831-1921) at Puckett’s Bend in Breathitt County, Kentucky. They had four children. Their eldest, Syrene Cockerham (1868-1962), married Robert Pepper McCoun (1860-1940). They were our great grandparents. James worked at several occupations, according to U.S. census reports for Wolfe County: he was a farmer in 1870; a carpenter in 1880; a hotel landlord in 1900; a liveryman in 1910; and a retiree when he died on 30 August 1916.
